Accidental Editing

March 31, 2009 pochp Comments off

<!– @page { margin: 0.79in } P { margin-bottom: 0.08in } H4 { margin-bottom: 0.08in } A:link { so-language: zxx } –>I was just commenting about this post and you know what happened?

It turned out that I edited a typo according to Ray the author!

You (me) said 23 hours ago:

“Great post.

‘If you remember from your Philosophy class in college, Plato believed in a duality of good and evil– all things physical being good and all things spiritual being evil.’

Maybe Plato should have reversed this and believed instead:
-all things physical being evil and all things spiritual being good.
Would that agree with Christianity?

Ray Deck III said 32 minutes ago:

Good catch, Pochp. Total typo on my part.”

Honest. I’m still not even sure if I edited Ray or not.

Important Questions

March 30, 2009 pochp 9 comments

I stumbled upon this post from someone named Sat Nam:

‘Eastern philosophy suggested that we are born into a state of ecstasy, and anything that draws us away from that state, and away from flow will be one of the following:
Something you are not doing, Someone you are not being, or Something you are not having.
Consider the following:

What are you not doing that you really want to do?
What are you not having that you really want to have?
Who are you not being that you really want to be?’

Really makes you think, doesn’t it?

DeathSwitch

March 30, 2009 pochp 3 comments

About 2 months ago, I was thinking about what would happen to my email account and web files when I die. Then I read about Death Switch.
It’s like an email insurance that works like this:
DS regularly  prompts you for your password. If you don’t respond for a certain period, DS will assume you’re dead and will pass your account to the ones you have named. Great idea ha?
The risk: your password might fall into the wrong hands. But if you’re sure you’re near death, e.g. terminal disease, then the risk is worth it, isn’t it?

Cyber Attack on SE Asia

March 29, 2009 pochp 2 comments

From Tim Leyes for The New York Times:

‘A vast electronic spying operation has infiltrated computers and has stolen documents from hundreds of government and private offices around the world, including those of the Dalai Lama, Canadian researchers have concluded.
The Toronto academic researchers who are reporting on the spying operation dubbed GhostNet include, from left, Ronald J. Deibert, Greg Walton, Nart Villeneuve and Rafal A. Rohozinski.
In a report to be issued this weekend, the researchers said that the system was being controlled from computers based almost exclusively in China, but that they could not say conclusively that the Chinese government was involved.
The researchers, who have a record of detecting computer espionage, said they believed that in addition to the spying on the Dalai Lama, the system, which they called GhostNet, was focused on the governments of South Asian and Southeast Asian countries.’

The most probable group who would do this would be the one who is losing its grip on Southeast Asia.

April 1 Conficker Attack

March 27, 2009 pochp 2 comments

From PCMag:

‘Analysts are wondering what the latest Conficker variant will do on April 1. A new flaw in Firefox has its developers rushing to get a fixed version out to users. Fake Twitter sites are the latest thing for those pushing scam web sites. And earlier reports that IE8 is vulnerable to a flaw now look incorrect. For more on these threats, vulnerabilities and other issues, visit the Watch.
Some security experts such as Eset are urging you to back up in advance of April 1 and to make sure that your security software is working properly. Of course (and they say this too) these are things you should do in any event. But make sure that the update mechanisms for Windows and your anti-malware are actually occurring because Conficker can turn them off.
But the big news with C is that the code is scheduled to come alive on April 1 and start contacting the 50,000 domains and download something. What will they download? What will it make the bots do? Honestly, nobody knows. This is the great mystery.’
