Walkman Ditches iPod

June 30, 2009 pochp Comments off

Here is another proof that old lo-tech just keeps coming back.
Thirteen-year old Scott Campbell exchanged his iPod for a Walkman. He noted that the Walkman, unlike the iPod, contains 2 headphone jacks, ‘meaning the little music that I have, I can share with friends.’ Source: BBC

Universal Text Engine

June 29, 2009 pochp Comments off

DARPA has hired BNN Technologies to develop a machine reader that will scour the Web and render certain information and knowledge into a form that is more easily digested and usable. But it’s not clear yet whether the machine reader will be available to civilians:

‘BBN Technologies was recently awarded a $29.7 million contract to develop a universal text engine that will capture intelligence and render it usable to humans as well as artificial intelligence (AI) systems. Officially called the Machine Reading Program, this new system will “automatically monitor the technological and political activities of nation states and transnational organizations – which could mean everything from al-Qaeda to the U.N.” for the US military. BBN expects there may also be many useful civilian applications for its new reader. The company has also developed a real-time audio stream called the the BBN Broadcast Monitoring System that automatically transcribes real-time audio streams and translates them into English.
Some paranoid types will believe this is nothing more than “the man” trying to spy on us, but those people need to realize everything we do online is being watched by someone. If you are really concerned about your online privacy you should secure important data on your computer, call your government leaders and try to change privacy laws, or stay off the Web altogether.
Researchers, medical professionals, consumers, students and others are all likely to benefit from such an application. Not having to spend unnecessary time searching through mountains of information on the Web for something relevant makes life easier and allows us to be more productive.’ Source: ReadWriteWeb

Computer Port Numbers

June 29, 2009 pochp Comments off

Computer port numbers is an advanced tech subject but which we need to know about for pc safety.
Here is an excerpt from a post by TTC Shelbyville:

‘Port numbers are like doors on your house.  These doors can be locked or open for people to come into.  Firewalls are the locks on your computer, locking these doors and preventing access.  What are some of the common port numbers and what services / programs use these?
7    Ping  also known as ICMP or ECHO  How do you use it?  Go to start, run type cmd.  Hit Enter.  Type ipconfig.  This will give you the ip address of your computer and your gateway.  What is a gateway?  Usually this is your router or modem.  Type ping and the number of your gateway.  You should get a response.  This tells you if you can communicate with this device.  A requested time-out indicates there is a problem.  Now that you can use ping, you can substitute the number if you know another computer’s ip address.  If the computer has a firewall on, you will get a requested time out.  This is a great troubleshooting tool….’ TTC Shelbyville

Ugliest Dog ‘Champion’

I love dogs but I wouldn’t risk my loved ones getting near this devil:

‘He may not look like much, but boxer-mix Pabst dug up $1,600 for his owner by winning the annual World’s Ugliest Dog contest. Rescued from an animal shelter by Californian Miles Egstad, Pabst and his remarkable looks—a pronounced under-bite, crumpled face, and floppy ears—took first prize in the Sonoma-Marin Fair contest.’

Michael’s Cause of Death

June 28, 2009 pochp 2 comments

So the possibility that Michael Jackson died of drug mismanagement just like so many other musicians is getting more probable:
‘The Sun gets the details on the potentially lethal cocktail of prescription drugs Michael Jackson was on in the months before his death. Jackson took addictive narcotic painkillers Demerol and Diluadid daily, the Sun’s sources say, and had recently added Vicodin to the mix. He also took a muscle relaxant called Soma, a sedative (Xanax) and two anti-depressants (Zoloft and Paxil, which is prescribed for social anxiety).

The Sun says he got 3 injections of Demerol a day—one just before his collapse Thursday. The LA County coroners office says it will take weeks to determine whether the drugs caused his death. Jackson had insisted on bringing his personal physician on his upcoming London tour, the promoter tells the Sun: “He just said, ‘Look, this whole business revolves around me. I’m a machine and we have to keep the machine well-oiled,’ and you don’t argue with the King of Pop.”‘ Source: Sun (UK)

Even though I have lost respect for MJ over the years, it still touches your heart when former innocent prodigy children suddenly go too early. It’s a great wonder to me how as a child, he sang a song so genuine and touching yet the title was ‘Happy’. A masterpiece.
I hope you’re at peace Michael.

Air France Crash update

June 28, 2009 pochp Comments off

If the AFF 447 crashed because of computer failure, then the theory that it exploded in mid-air is debunked:

‘Investigators trying to piece together the fate of Air France Flight 447 in the absence of its black boxes are focusing on possible computer failures, the Wall Street Journal reports. The evidence suggests a problem with the sensors quickly snowballed into widespread computer outages, leaving the crew struggling to manage without the automated systems on which modern pilots rely.

The crash is raising questions about how well today’s pilots can cope without the computerized systems that completely control jets like the Airbus A330. Airplane computer failures are so rare that most pilots have little or no experience dealing with them in real-world situations, experts note. Investigators believe the crew of Flight 447 may have still been trying to restart the computers even as the plane began to break apart.’ Source: Wall Street Journal

Michael’s Cause of Death and ‘Last Picture’

June 27, 2009 pochp 4 comments

The question is: Did Michael die of heart attack or cardiac arrest? Here’s the difference:

Cardiac arrest simply means that the victims has lost their blood pressure and their pulse. This usually means that there has been a collapse of the circulatory systems and many times, due to an accelerated heartbeat. Cardiac arrest can also occur from a major blood clot in the lung or a heart enlarged from infection or other damage.

MJ's lastA heart attack stems from buildup of plaque in the arteries.

Bing or Google or Bing?

June 27, 2009 pochp 2 comments

Users can’t decide between Bing and Google. But I surely believe this report because
it’s what I practice:

‘Bing, Microsoft’s new search engine, impresses users—but not enough to make them switch from Google, TechCrunch reports. Asked to rate Bing’s features, users in a study by the Catalyst Group thought Bing beat Google in almost every category, including visual design, organization, and filtering options. The exception was search result relevance, in which they found Google and Bing to be equal.

‘Nonetheless, two-thirds of the users said they wouldn’t switch because of their familiarity with Google. Bing is “as good as Google,” said Catalyst’s CEO, “and that is not good enough.”’ Source: TechCrunch
