Sgt. Munley a Hero Even Before Fort Hood -updated
Now we know why she’s called ‘Mighty Mouse’. The heroine is only 5ft tall:
‘Crazed Major Nidal Malik Hasan shot the policewoman in the right knuckle and once in each thigh. But she bravely fired back until he fell, then helped disarm and handcuff him. The massacre left 13 dead and dozens injured at Fort Hood military base in Texas. Mum-of-two Kimberly, 34, who is only 5ft tall, said on America’s Oprah Winfrey Show: “I never lost consciousness. I refused to – I wanted to know everything.” A doctor said the cop’s first words after the shooting were: “Did anybody die?” Kimberly, nicknamed Mighty Mouse, said: “I was very concerned who else had been injured.”
‘The cop said her daughters, aged two and 12, were nonplussed to find their mum was a national hero. Kimberly said: “My oldest one thinks it’s quite funny every time she turns the TV her mother is on.”
She appeared with Sgt Mark Todd, also credited with firing the bullet that stopped the killer. Tests should reveal the truth. But Mark said he treated the gunman as soon as he was disarmed. He said: “We had to keep him alive.”
Hasan faces 13 counts of premeditated murder, which carry the death penalty.’ -The Sun
Munley in good condition despite gunshot wounds in both thighs and a knuckle:
‘The police sergeant who brought down the Fort Hood shooter tells Oprah she’s “doing well” despite three gunshot wounds. Kimberly Munley, 34, said the call came in as she was washing her patrol car at the end of her shift. “The entire incident was very confusing and chaotic,” Munley said from her hospital room. “There was many people outside pointing to the direction that this individual was apparently located, and as soon as I got out of my vehicle and ran up the hill was when things got pretty bad.”
‘In the ensuing chaos, Munley got shot in both thighs and a knuckle, but is in good condition, CNN reports. “Every day is a progress for me,” she said, “and things are getting better day by day. I’m doing well.” She said her performance was nothing extraordinary. “The training does take over. In that particular incident, we didn’t have much time to think.”’ -CNN
When she saved her partner’s life before this, Appler called her ‘Mighty Mouse’:
‘Kimberly Munley is being hailed as a hero for bringing down the Fort Hood shooter while taking three bullets herself, and her former partner isn’t a bit surprised. Shaun Appler, who worked with her years ago in North Carolina, tells the Austin American-Statesman that he began calling her “Mighty Mouse” after she leaped through the air to free him from an assailant choking him and trying to grab his gun.
‘“She saved my life that night,” Appler says. “When I found out the female officer at Fort Hood was Kim, I wasn’t surprised. Kim not only has the training, I know she was mentally prepared to know what to do when you get into that situation.” He spoke to her by phone yesterday. “She is in good spirits, although she is obviously saddled with the loss of life that occurred there.”‘ – Austin American-Statesman
