TV Remote Control now a Dying Gadget Too

Finally, even the beloved remote control is now a dying gizmo:

Project Natal

‘Losing your remote control will soon be a thing of the past, thanks to new technology that embraces motion control, making it possible to channel surf with your hands. Hitachi televisions, for example, will allow you to change the channel by twisting your wrist, the New York Times reports. Microsoft’s Project Natal, to be released later this year, will compete with the Nintendo Wii—but without controllers, allowing you to use just your body to dodge balls and do skateboard tricks.

‘Such devices, previewed at last week’s Consumer Electronics Show, employ gesture technology cameras to capture the world in 3D—meaning that, unlike past attempts in 2D that proved disappointing, these technologies really work: In one demonstration, a chip could even differentiate between a person’s jacket, shirt, and undershirt. Computers with similar technology are also expected later this year.’ –NY Times

Possible big problem: everyone can control the screen triggering fights right?

  1. Hey buddy, good to see you kicking again.
Well, I haven’t seen the product too so like you, I’m not buying yet.
But there’s voice recognition now isn’t it? I remember I wanted to do business
with VOIP when it came in 2006.

  2. I spent hundreds of dollars on Dragon Naturally Speaking back in the late 90s because we were told that voice recognition technology was the coming wave. Boy, was I fooled. I’ll believe this when I see it. Not saying it ain’t gonna happen, just that I’ll wait and see before I decide to start a parade.

What do you think?
