Attorney General Defends the Right to Kill Americans
Holder says killing American terrorists is not ‘assassination’

‘The U.S. government has the right to order the killing of American citizens overseas if they are senior al-Qaeda leaders who pose an imminent terrorist threat and cannot reasonably be captured, Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. said Monday.

“’Any decision to use lethal force against a United States citizen — even one intent on murdering Americans and who has become an operational leader of al-Qaeda in a foreign land — is among the gravest that government leaders can face,” Holder said in a speech at Northwestern University’s law school in Chicago. “The American people can be — and deserve to be — assured that actions taken in their defense are consistent with their values and their laws.”

‘Holder’s discussion of lethal force against U.S. citizens did not mention any individual by name, but his address was clearly animated by the killing of Anwar al-Awlaki, a senior figure in al-Qaeda’s Yemeni affiliate. Awlaki, who was born in New Mexico, played an operational role in several plots, including the failed attempt to bring down a commercial airliner over Detroit in 2009, according to administration officials. In September, he was killed in a U.S. drone strike in Yemen…’

Busload of Kids Saved from Tornado
But heroine loses three relatives of her own

‘Terry Kleopfer has driven a bus for the Southwestern School District in Hanover for 23 years and has never seen what she saw Friday afternoon.

“‘It was hailing so bad and I could see the cloud and I could see it was coming,” said Kleopfer.
Kleopfer and two other bus drivers headed for the Chelsea general store, where sixty children sought refuge behind a giant cooler inside as the tornado passed by.

‘Another couple minutes on the road, and Kleopfer would have driven straight into the path of the twister which destroyed her house and killed four people in Jefferson County. Three of them were her relatives…’

Kids Accidentally Given Breast Cancer Drugs
These medical accidents are becoming more common you have to wonder if the ‘accidents’ are not
intentional

‘Kids in as many as 50 families in Chatham, New Jersey were mistakenly given breast cancer medication instead of chewable fluoride tablets. While the fluoride the children were supposed to receive is used to prevent tooth decay, the pill Tamoxifen blocks the production of estrogen. CVS has alerted all the families and apologized, but no one can figure out exactly how this happened.

‘On the plus side, any kids who did take Tamoxifen before realizing the error are probably in the clear…’

How Animals And Humans Heal Each Other
‘Those of us who own pets know they make us happy. But a growing body of scientific research is showing that our pets can also make us healthy, or healthier.

‘That helps explain the increasing use of animals — dogs and cats mostly, but also birds, fish, and even horses — in settings ranging from hospitals and nursing homes to schools, jails and mental institutions.

‘Take Viola, or Vi for short. The retired guide dog is the resident canine at the Children’s Inn on the campus of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. The Inn is where families stay when their children are undergoing experimental therapies at NIH…’

Violin Strings with Spider Silk
I wonder if it could replace steel strings too

‘A Japanese researcher has used thousands of strands of spider silk to spin a set of violin strings.

‘The strings are said to have a “soft and profound timbre” relative to traditional gut or steel strings.

‘That may arise from the way the strings are twisted, resulting in a “packing structure” that leaves practically no space between any of the strands.

‘The strings will be described in a forthcoming edition of the journal Physical Review Letters…’
