Scientists Find Deadline for Evacuating Earth
‘If the end of the summer, the short, cold days, and party conference season were not enough to bring on the gloom, scientists have calculated when life on Earth must come to an end.
‘In a report that manufacturers of diaries may wish to note, researchers worked out when the sun will grow so warm that the oceans evaporate and the planet ceases to be habitable. As an inconvenient consequence of our sun’s natural life cycle and the orbit of the Earth, the planet will warm so much it becomes impossible for plants, animals and humans to survive…’
How Many Die From Medical Mistakes in U.S. Hospitals?
‘In 2010, the Office of Inspector General for Health and Human Services said that bad hospital care contributed to the deaths of 180,000 patients in Medicare alone in a given year.
‘Now comes a study in the current issue of the Journal of Patient Safety that says the numbers may be much higher – between 210,000 and 440,000 patients each year who go to the hospital for care suffer some type of preventable harm that contributes to their death, the study says.
‘That would make medical errors the third-leading cause of death in America, behind heart disease, which is the first, and cancer, which is second…’
Chicago is Murder Capital of US
‘Chicago is now the murder capital of the United States, according to new statistics. The FBI released the data earlier this week. Chicago police reported 500 murders in the city last year. That’s up from the 431 murders recorded in 2011. Chicago’s number is significantly higher than New York’s 419 recorded murders in 2012, despite the fact the Windy City only has one third as many residents as the Big Apple. (Via WFLD) But residents of both cities were a lot less likely to be victims of a homicide than those who live in Flint, Michigan…’
Parasite Makes Mice Fearless of Cats
That is good news of course. But cockroaches are bad news and have gone mad too — instead of running away from us humans, they rush towards us. Makes me really mad too
‘A parasite that changes the brains of rats and mice so that they are attracted to cats and cat urine seems to work its magic almost right away, and continues to control the brain even after it’s gone, researchers reported on Wednesday.
‘The mind-controlling parasite, called Toxoplasma gondii, might make permanent changes in brain function as soon as it gets in there, the researchers report. They aren’t sure how yet…’
